Goodbye for now, Uncle Bob.

On Friday, May 9, 2008 my dear uncle Bob went to be with the Lord. He was 72.
He was the best uncle anyone could ask for. He was an awesome brother to my mom, 75. He was a wonderful man and I will miss him so very much. I will see him again one day when I get to Heaven.

Robert M. Mitchell, 72, Marion, died at 12:48 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2008 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, Ind. He was born in Muskegon, Mich. March 27, 1936 to Henry and Wilma O. (Shafer) Mitchell and has been a resident of Grant County since 1969. He married Ruth Harris March 21, 1959 and she survives.

Robert was a college professor at Indiana Wesleyan University, Lansing Community College, Spring Arbor College and a school teacher at Northwest Schools, Jackson, Mich. He was the mayor of Marion during the years of 1988 - 1991. He was also a Marion City judge from 1976-1987 and was a member of College Wesleyan Church. He had received several service awards and was commissioned as a “Distinguished Hoosier” by Gov. Evan Bayh and was a previous member of the American Historical Society. Preferred memorials may be made to the Gideons or the Jesus Films Project of Global Partners.

Visitation was 5-8 p.m. Monday, May 12 at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, Ind, and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.

Funeral service was 11 a.m. Tuesday at College Wesleyan Church, with officiant Dr. Judy Huffman and Rev. Mark Thompson. Graveside service was set for Elbridge Township Cemetery, Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth M. Mitchell of Marion; daughter, Marilyn R. Warren, Fishers, Ind.; son, Steven D. (Rebecca) Mitchell, Bloomfield, Ind.; sister, Jean Smith, Shelby, Mich.; brother, Raymond H. (Peggy) Mitchell, New Era, Mich.; five grandchildren, Adam, Aaron and Carrie Mitchell, Tyler and Amanda Warren.

He was preceded in death by brother David W. Mitchell.
